Bike to Work Day 2006
To celebrate this event, Barb Stine, Principal Deputy Associate Director for Technical Services, has been invited to distribute water bottles donated from the Laboratory’s Pollution Prevention Team outside the Hot Rocks Java Cafe from 7–9 am. In addition, free coffee and breakfast burritos will be provided, while they last, by supporting sponsors.
- You are reducing automotive pollution. The North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization recognizes that automobiles are the single largest source of air pollution in the USA. An average four-mile round-trip bike commute prevents nearly 15 pounds of auto air pollution from contaminating your air. More bicycle use means less benzene, cyanide, lead, carbon monoxide, CFC's, sulfates and ozone in the air we breathe.
- You are conserving oil. Riding a bike to work is something we can all do to conserve oil and reduce our national dependency.
- You are reducing roadway congestion. It has been estimated that Los Alamos County will spend $9 million dollars to reconstruct and rehabilitate Diamond Drive, and this will include dedicated bike lanes from LANL to the San Ildefonso roundabout. By riding your bike, you put one less vehicle on the road and one more bike in the bike lane.
- You are becoming physically active, and thus improving your health. According to the American Medical Association, physical inactivity coupled with cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans.
- You are getting in touch with your community. According to Khalil Spencer, Actinide Analytical Chemistry (C-AAC), “Riding a bike allows you to see more of the world around you. The slightly slower pace gives you more time to observe and enjoy life.”
- You are saving money on gas and car maintenance. According to the North Range Metropolitan Planning Organization, you might be able to save as much as 25% of your income if you can replace your car or second car with a combination of bicycling, transit, an occasional cab or rented car.
- You may actually arrive at work earlier and in a better mood without hassling to find parking.
In order to assist riders, especially new or inexperienced ones, the LANL Bike To Work Committee will provide the following services:
1. A pre-ride safety and bike fit inspection will be provided on May 12th from 10 am to 2 pm at Caballo Bike and Ski for participants and ride leaders. Caballo Bike and Ski is located at 1910 Deacon Street in Los Alamos.
2. A pre-ride briefing will be held on May 18th at 6 p.m. for participants and experienced cyclists acting as escorts at the Sullivan Field Parking Lot.
3. Experienced cyclists will be available at strategic locations to ride with less experienced cyclists to and from work. These locations will be published on the Caballo Bike and Ski web page: http://www.caballobikeandski.com/.
4. And of course, there will be camaraderie!
All participants are reminded to prepare yourself and your bike for riding. The Laboratory's Wellness Center has an excellent set of safety tips adopted from the Bicycle Subcommittee of the Los Alamos County’s Transportation Board: http://www.wellness.lanl.gov/olrsc/tips/bicycles.htm. We want you to arrive safely.
In addition, we are looking for experienced riders to act as volunteers to ride with less experienced riders. Please contact Khal Spencer (spencerk@lanl.gov) or Scott Doebling (doebling@lanl.gov) by May 16th if you wish to act as an experienced escort.
